Alphonse de Neuville has illustrated this famous action as the battle reaches its height. Looking southwest the farmhouse, which was being used as a hospital is ablaze and the patients are being transferred through a small side window to the storehouse on the left. Lt. Bromhead is depicted in the centre, pointing, with private Hitch just behind him.
Surgeon Reynolds, kneeling, is attending a patient while just behind him Chaplin Smith is handing out ammunition.
The first line of defence illustrated on the right is composed of mealie bags. In this Lt. Chard is accepting ammunition supplies from Corp. Allen, while to his right Colour Sergeant Borne is leaning over the Mealie bags to take better aim! On the left the second line of defence is under construction with biscuit boxes, which they were soon to fall back to.

NELSON ON BOARD THE SAN JOSEPH
ACCEPTING THE SURRENDER FROM THE SPANISH ADMIRAL

The incident depicted in this engraving took place at the Battle of St. Vincent, and first revealed the full capacity of Nelson. The battle fought on the 14th February 1797 between the British and the Spanish was the first disastrous result of the Spanish governments alliance with the French republic. The Spanish Fleet consisted of twenty-seven sail. They were very good ships, but poorly crewed.
The British fleet consisted of fifteen ships of the line under Sir John Jervis.
The British Admiral’s plan was at first well conceived, but after the initial engagement, a large part of the Spanish force was in a position to make its escape.
In his ship, the Captain (seventy four guns) Nelson, without orders, turned out of the British line and placed himself across the bows of the Spaniards. Jervis approved of the manoeuvre and signalled the ships in Nelson’s rear to follow. Nelson’s third-rate ship came into close action with the Spanish flagship Santissima Trinidad (one hundred and thirty guns). The Spanish flagship was said to have struck, but the British were not in a position to take possession of her. The Captain then became engaged in a close action with San Nicolas (eighty guns). As the ships became locked together, Nelson led a boarding party and they successfully took the San Nicolas. It was about this moment the San Josef (one hundred and twelve guns) ran into the side of San Nicolas. Nelson rallied his men and they carried the San Joseph by boarding as well. Nelson thus captured two first rate battle ships, (a first by a single ship). Although well known in the navy, Nelson was now to become a household name.

FASHIONABLE CONTRASTS: - OR - THE DUCHESS’S LITTLE SHOE YIELDING TO THE MAGNITUDE OF THE DUKE’S FOOT
As well as being blatant in his observations, Gillray could be incredibly subtle, and puncture vanity with a remarkably deft approach. The outstanding example of this is his print Fashionable Contrasts;—or—The Duchess's little Shoe yeilding to the Magnitude of the Duke's Foot. This was a devastating image aimed at the ridiculous sycophancy directed by the press towards Frederica Charlotte Ulrica, Duchess of York, and the supposed daintiness of her feet.
