Built in 1620 on the site of an earlier church, the Convent in the foreground takes the well fortified square shape familiar from numerous other religious foundations throughout the Middle East. Joseph's workshop is said to have been located to the north-east of the Convent beneath a small church and, to the west of that, the synagogue beneath a small arched building; but the location of both sites is unknown today.
