James Nasmyth (1808 - 1890) was a Scottish engineer and inventor famous for his development of the steam hammer.
Later in life in pursuit of his hobby, he his own 20 inch reflecting telescope. Because photography had not advanced enough to take actual pictures of the moon, Nasmyth used his observations of the moon to build plaster models of the lunar surface.
Using light to create shadows similar to those on the lunar surface, he photographed the models.
