THE BATTLE OF ULUNDI – FINAL RUSH OF THE ZULUS – BRITISH SQUARE IN THE DISTANCE
From a drawing by Melton Prior, special Artist for the Illustrated London News
On July 4TH 1879 (6 months after the Battle of Rourke’s Drift) Lord Chelmsford reached King Cetewayo’s capital at Ulundi where he formed a hollow square with a force of 4200 troops and 1000 natives. 10,000 Zulus charged the square but were repelled by rifle fire and bayonet.
The British suffered 100 casualties and the Zulus 1500. The Battle ended a war which history remembers for the British disaster at Isandhlwana and the bravery at Rourke’s Drift.
