SHRINE OF THE ANNUNCIATION, NAZARETH APRIL 20TH 1839
SHRINE OF THE ANNUNCIATION, NAZARETH APRIL 20TH 1839
Under the great basilica the Shrine of the Annunciation today is framed by the archaeological discoveries of recent years in the lower church. The centre piece is the apse of a mid-fifth century Byzantine church with, in front of it, a large basin from a pre-Constantinian baptistery. This is the spot where the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary. The two pillars seen in the lithograph (that on the left has a missing centre portion) are said to mark the exact places, revealed to St. Helena in a dream, where Mary and Gabriel stood. Above the grotto, where the Virgin Mary was said to have lived, stood the Holy House which was miraculously transported by angels to Yugoslavia in 1291, thence on to Loreto near Ancona in 1295, where it is still the centre of pilgrimage (visited by Pope John XXIII in 1962).

THE CHAPEL OF THE CONVENT OF ST. CATHERINE ON MOUNT SINAI. FEBY 21ST 1839
THE CHAPEL OF THE CONVENT OF ST. CATHERINE ON MOUNT SINAI. FEBY 21ST 1839
The chapel of St. Catherine's church is one of the most sumptuous of the Greek Orthodox Church, even more so than Roberts' view shows. It is built of granite and there are twelve monolithic granite pillars, six each side of the nave, representing the months of the year and with fantastically finely carved capitals. On the right of the view is the Archbishop's magnificent canopied throne. St. Catherine's skull is preserved in a marble sarcophagus by the High Altar. In the dome of the eastern apse, behind the High Altar, is a sixth-century mosaic of the Transfiguration. Behind the apse lies the Chapel of the Burning Bush, originally built by Helena on the site of the Burning Bush. Still today, pilgrims put off their shoes`for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground' (Exodus 3, 2-5). Whilst Roberts was at St. Catherine's he was allowed to sketch freely, even the monks, except, he records, here in the Chapel. Excuses were constantly presented to prevent him, `They had mislaid the key, or some such frivolous reason. At length, I fairly took out my sketch-book during service; they could not interrupt me while engaged in their sacred duties; and I thus effected my object'. Sketching and photography are still forbidden in the church today.

TOMB OF ZECHARIAH VALLEY OF JEHOSHAPHAT
TOMB OF ZECHARIAH VALLEY OF JEHOSHAPHAT
One of the four major funerary monuments in the Kidron valley, the `Tomb of Zachariah' stands at the entrance to a multi-chambered catacomb of the second half of the second century B.C. It combines Egyptian and Greek architectural elements with its pyramidal roof and Ionic columns. A Hebrew inscription on the architrave identifies it as the property of a priestly family, the Bene Hezir. It also has architectural affinities with some of the tombs at Petra.

TSUR ANCIENT TYRE FROM THE ISTHMUS APRIL 27TH 1839
TSUR ANCIENT TYRE FROM THE ISTHMUS APRIL 27TH 1839
This view looks at the ancient city directly across the isthmus begun during Alexander the Great's siege in 332 B.C. It has built itself into a causeway now some 800 yards wide; the island itself is a mile in length. Having resisted the attacks of Shalmaneser in 720 B.C., Nebuchadnezzar wasted thirteen unsuccessful years blockading the island; Sennecherib only managed to take the city in 701 B.C. because the King of Tyre had fled. Alexander exacted a terrible revenge on the inhabitants for resisting him; 8000 died in the final attack, 2000 were crucified and the sorry remnant were sold into slavery.
