CHRISTIAN & MAHOMEDAN CHAPLES ON THE SUMMIT OF SINAI
The top of Mount Sinai is reached after a two- hour climb up 3,750 steps from St. Catherine's Monastery. Today the site where Moses received the Tablets of the Law with the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34, 1-28) is marked by a chapel built in 1934 from the material salvaged from Justinian's earlier church erected in 532 and repeatedly destroyed.

CONVENT OF ST. SABA. APRIL 1839
The first monastery was built on this site in 482 by St. Sabas (439-532 A.D.) after having inhabited a cave in the wadi for five years. Over the years the buildings expanded and reached their highpoint in the eighth and ninth centuries. One of its most famous residents was St. John Damascen, c. A.D. 750, who defended the legitimacy of images in Christian art. It is the only remaining monastery of the many that existed in the Judaean desert which is still in use and can claim continuous occupation since its foundation. However, the number of monks is rapidly decreasing.

CONVENT OF THE TERRA-SANTA, NAZARETH APRIL 21ST 1839
Built in 1620 on the site of an earlier church, the Convent in the foreground takes the well fortified square shape familiar from numerous other religious foundations throughout the Middle East. Joseph's workshop is said to have been located to the north-east of the Convent beneath a small church and, to the west of that, the synagogue beneath a small arched building; but the location of both sites is unknown today.

GEBIL HOR. MARCH 5TH 1839
The evening before he entered Petra Roberts climbed one of the high hills in order to get a distant view of the city. In this he was disappointed since he found himself surrounded by hills with only the view of Aaron's tomb on Mount Hor set between the wadis Ghor and Arabah. However, he considered that the climb was well worth the view that he did get.

NABLOUS, ANCIENT SHECHEM. APRIL 17TH 1839
Nablus (Shechem) features large in the Old and New Testaments. Its natural position of strength made it a focal point. At Shechem Abraham raised his first altar to the Lord and was promised Cannan (Genesis 12, 6-7). Simeon and Levi, the sons of Jacob, revenged themselves on Prince Shechem, son of Hamor the Hittite, after he had raped their sister Dinah. First, by guile, they persuaded the males of Shechem to have themselves circumcised then, three days later `when they were still sore', the brother attacked the city and killed all the males (Genesis 34,1-27). The twelve sons of Jacob and Joseph were buried here and Rehoboam was crowned first king of all Israel (1 Kings 12, 1) The Jews refused to allow the Samaritans to help in the rebuilding of the Temple at Jerusalem, so they built a rival one on Mount Gerizim at Shechem, which was destroyed in 129 B.C.
